Police in Rivers State have urged the
University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student community and the general
public not to construe the reopening of the university as an end to the
trial of suspects of the Aluu four murders.
Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ben Ugwuegbulam, in a statement, yesterday, noted that the clarification had become necessary following public apprehension as management last Thursday declared Uniport reopened after being shut to academic activities following the October 9 students protest over the murder of their schoolmates in Aluu community.
According to the PPRO, the trial of the suspects was very much on and more arrests had been made in the police determination to ensure that the culprits were brought to book working in concert with the courts.
Ugwuegbulam, who welcomed resumption at the school, cautioned students to go about their normal activities peacefully, assuring that security around the institution and its host communities had been beefed up to keep the peace and forestall breakdown of law and order.
Sunday Vanguard however noticed that students were yet to fully embrace the reopening announced three days earlier as the student population in and around the school was still scanty with returnees coming into campus in trickles.
