Michael Jackson's family launch $40bn law suit against promoters AEG Live
Michael Jackson's family have launched their lawsuit against concert promoters AEG Live, whom they accuse of responsibility for the singer's death in 2009.
Jackson died aged 50 at his home in Los Angeles, after he was administered an overdose of the sedative Propofol by his Doctor, Conrad Murray, to treat chronic insomnia.
Murray was jailed in 2011 after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Jackson's mother Katherine Jackson, 82, claims AEG was negligent in hiring Murray to see her son through rehearsals for a planned 50-show concert series at the O2 Arena in London. She and her family are seeking $40bn (£26.5bn) in compensation.
AEG, meanwhile, claims Jackson's drug abuse began long before he came into contact with Murray. The trial, which is expected to last more than two months, is likely to feature testimony from Mrs Jackson herself, as well as two of the late singer's children, Prince, 16, and Paris, 14. Murray may also be called to the stand again, though he could refuse to appear. There is even speculation that the singer Prince, a contemporary of Jackson's, will be invited to testify on the family's behalf.
