88-Year Old Man Becomes Tunisia’s President

Beji Caid Essebsi, 88, is the new Tunisian president. Essebsi was sworn in today as Tunisia’s first freely elected president. He was the speaker of parliament under President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011. He pledged to work towards national reconciliation shortly after taking his oath of office.

Tokunbo cars to cost more from January 1, 2015

As from first of January 2015, prices of imported used cars otherwise known as Tokunbo or second-hand cars are expected to go up as the second phase of the national automotive policy which was announced in November 2013, will commence.
Car dealers would be expected to pay the federal government 70% duty on all imported cars. FG had in 2013 introduced the national automotive policy with the view of encouraging local assemblage of automobiles in Nigeria, increasing the import tariff from 22% to 70%. The first phase of the policy involving the payment of 35% duty came into effect in February 2014 while the second phase which would have started in July this year was postponed to Jan. 2015.

FG declares January 2nd 2015 as public holiday

The Federal Government has declared January 2nd 2015 as public holiday to mark Eid el Maloud celebration. In a statement released yesterday by the Minister of Interior affairs, Abba Moro, the Federal government asked Muslim faithfuls to offer prayers to God for the peace and Unity of Nigeria.

Cause of Ebola outbreak was 'a young boy playing near colony of infected bats', scientists say

 Scientists said today that the cause of the deadly Ebola virus that hit West Africa this year was a 2 year old boy, known as patient zero, who played on a tree near a colony of virus-infested bats in his village in Meliandou, Guinea. He was the first person to die but before he died, he infected other family members, who then spread it to others and the virus eventually spread into other areas in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and Senegal, before moving to the US, UK and Spain.
This Ebola outbreak is by far the largest ever-recorded outbreak and it has killed about 7,800 people by Dec. 17, 2014, according to WHO.

Why I Did Not Submit My Certificates To INEC – Buhari

Former head of state and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general elections, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has explained why he did not submit his certificates and credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying that the documents are with the military.Leadership reports that,this came to light yesterday during a visit by journalists to the headquarters of INEC in Abuja where it was revealed that Buhari’s academic qualifications were not on display, unlike those of other presidential candidates including that of his main rival, President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Missing AirAsia Flight-Bodies of Passengers spotted floating in sea

AirAsia flight 8501 have found up to six dead bodies, luggage, a plane door and an emergency slide floating in the water off the coast of Borneo Island.
Indonesian officials coming off a helicopter said they spotted a numerous bodies over 40 floating in the water.

 The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has released the names of the presidential candidates and their running mates who will contest the 2015 elections. There are 26 registered political parties in Nigeria, only 11 parties have submitted the names of their candidates so far and they are;
PDP: President Goodluck Jonathan and his vice, Namadi Sambo
APC: Muhammadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo
KOWA Party: Oluremi Sonaiya and Saidu Bobboi
Hope Democratic Party: Ambrose Albert and Haruna Shaba
Allied Congress Party of Nigeria: Ganiyu Galadima and Balarabe Ahmed
Alliance Democracy (AD): Rafiu Salau and Clinton Cliff Akuchie

President Jonathan earns N43m as salary in 3 years,paid N6.2m as Tax

Vanguard reports that ,Details of the president’s tax payment also showed that the president did not earn any other income besides his fixed income as president of the country in that period. There were no indications of income from stocks or other businesses that the president could have had.
Despite earning a regular service of N14, 410, 290.48 in each of the three years, the president tax liabilities however increased in 2012 and 2013 to N2, 510, 775. 77 up from the N1, 242, 670.21 paid in 2011.

FG To Sponsor 100 First Class Graduates For Further Studies Abroad

The Federal Government is set to sponsor 100 first class graduates for further studies abroad, Minister for Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has revealed.
Shekarau who spoke on Sunday in Kano during a media interaction and an awards ceremony said the100 first class materials would be sponsored under the Special Presidential Scholarship Programme.
According to him, President Goodluck Jonathan has instructed the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to select the best graduates and secure admissions for them to study up to doctorate level in universities abroad.

 Folorunsho Alakija is worth at least $3.3 billion, about $300 million more than American television personality Oprah.The 62-year-old started her career as a secretary at the erstwhile Merchant Bank of Nigeria, but moved to England in the early 1980s to study fashion design. She then returned to set up a high-end label called Supreme Stitches. However, a significant proportion of Alakija’s fortune comes from an oil-exploration license granted to her company Famfa Ltd. in 1993.

Lagos DPO slumps, dies in office

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ijede Police Station, Nwaoha Uzoma, has died.
Our correspondent learnt that Uzoma’s corpse was found in his office on Thursday, a day after he entered and locked himself in.It was gathered that after he did not pick his calls, anxious relatives and policemen in the station broke the door open and saw his lifeless body on the floor.
Punch Metro gathered that Uzoma, a Superintendent of Police, was formerly heading the Anthony Police Division, before he was posted to Ijede, in the Ikorodu area, early in December.The deceased, who was married with children, was in his fifties.

President Jonathan on 1-day private visit to the UK

President Goodluck Jonathan travelled this Abuja for a 1-day private visit to the UK. According to a statement released by Presidential Spokesman, Reuben Abati, Pres. Jonathan was accompanied on the trip by some of his principal staff and personal aides and is expected back in Abuja on Monday December 29th. He is expected to meet with a delegation of people from Lagos and Delta state on Tuesday December 30th.

AirAsia flight carrying 162 from Indonesia to Singapore goes missing

An AirAsia flight carrying 162 people - 155 passengers, two pilots, four flight attendants and one engineer, which took off from the city of Surabaya in Indonesia and bound for Singapore, lost contact with air traffic control about two hours after take-off, while flying over the Java Sea.
The passengers included 138 adults, 16 children and one infant according to a statement released by AirAsia following the disappearance of the plane.

They all met behind closed-door with the general at his Hilltop Mansion. Shortly after the meeting, the president told journalists that he was in Minna to greet “his father” who recently returned to the country from a medical trip abroad. Former US President, George H.W Bush Hospitalized With Breathing Difficulties

Former President George H.W. Bush has been admitted last night at a Houston hospital after experiencing a shortness of breath. Bush, who is now 90, was rushed to Houston Methodist Hospital by an ambulance, when it became intensive.
It will be recalled that, Bush also spent about two months at the same hospital last year. President Obama who is currently holidaying at Hawaii has been notified.

ISIS in Nigeria to Recruit Fighters - FG

The Federal Government has raised alarm over the presence of some agents of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS, in Nigeria to recruit more fighters into their fold. Parents of missing Chibok girl say its going to be a bad Xmas for them

  One of the parents of the missing Chibok girls says it will be a bad Christmas for them this year as their daughter has still not returned. In an interview with CNN, the parents of the missing girl described her as a very studious girl

Lt. Col., 15 others jailed over Chibok girls’ abduction

The Nigerian Army has sentenced three officers and 13 other soldiers to two years’ imprisonment each over the April 14, 2014 abduction of over 200 schoolchildren from their hostel in Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents.The soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel, a Captain and a Second lieutenant, were arraigned before a General Military Court Martial at the Maxwell Khobe Military Cantonment, Rukuba in Jos, Plateau State, in October 2014.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN WELCOMES INTENSIFICATION OF ECONOMIC TIES BETWEEN NIGERIA AND ETHIOPIA

 President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday in Abuja applauded the cordial bilateral relations between Nigeria and Ethiopia, which, he said, has encouraged leading Nigerian companies to establish branches in the Horn of  Africa nation.Speaking at an audience with the outgoing Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Ali Abdo Suleiman, President Jonathan noted that  economic ties between both countries have improved significantly  in the last three years.The President Jonathan also observed that the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between both countries has resulted in regular flights from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, to four major cities in Nigeria - Abuja, Lagos, Enugu and Kano.

Bomb Blast Rocks Bauchi Market Hours After Killing 19 In Gombe

 Another bomb explosion has occurred at a market in Bauchi hours after killing 19 this morning at a bus station in Gombe. According to eyewitnesses the bomb exploded near a police outpost inside the market as traders were about closing for the day. The explosion occurred around 5:30pm and witnesses say, at least 15 people have died. Bauchi police spokesman also confirmed the explosion.
