FG sacks Director of FAAN

The Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka has sacked the Director of finance of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Tochukwu Bede Uchendu, over allegations of irregularities associated with his appointment into office as well as granting unapproved waivers worth N1 billion.
Mr Uchendu's sack was effected following a petition by the Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) dated March 23rd and addressed to the office of the Head of Service.

Jonathan, Sambo, Ministers, others to get N3.24bn severance pay

 According to the Remuneration Package  put together by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-president Namadi Sambo, non-returning Senators and House of Representatives members, ministers and  presidential aides will be paid a severance package of about N3.24bn as their stay in office terminates on May 29th this year.
According to Punch, President Jonathan  is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary which is put at N3, 514,705 and therefore his severance allowance will be N10, 544,115 after May 29. This however does not affect his constitutional benefits as a former President.

Buhari lacks the powers to stop AIT from covering his activities - Dokpesi

The Chairman of Daar Communications, owners of AIT, Chief Raymond Dokpesi says that the president-elect, Gen Buhari lacked the constitutional powers to stop his TV station from covering his activities. According to him, the decision to bar the station on Monday April 27th was a reminder of the Decree 4 era which he, Buhari, enacted against freedom of the press when he was in power
    "I am sure that the President-elect needs to be reminded of Decree 4, and he should be clearly reminded that section 32 of the constitution makes it mandatory for the media to hold public officials accountable to the people. The president-elect said that he does not want to be covered by AIT, but AIT has a responsibility to the Nigerian public to report the things that are happening.

NNPC audit reveals double payment of subsidy on petrol & kerosene, spent N3.65trn without approval


The just released audit report by PricewaterHouse Coopers PWC on the financial management of the NNPC has revealed that there were many cases of duplicated subsidy payment by the NNPC to many oil marketers between 2012 and 2013.
According to the report, payment of subsidies for petrol (PMS) and kerosene (DPK) between January 2012 and July 2013 when investigated had a difference of $980 million (about N195 billion) due to duplicated payments.

APC alleges GEJ's administration engaging in last minute dubious activities

The Leadership of the APC has alleged that members of Pres. Jonathan's administration are engaging in last minute dubious activities ahead of the May 29th handover. In a statement released by the publicity secretary of the party, Lai Mohammed, the party alleged that reports from the media as well as information gathered from reliable sources suggest the current administration is engaging in rushed contract awarding and staff recruitment.

Lagos to provide Wi-Fi to all Lagos residents

The Lagos state government   has revealed plans to provide Wi-fi to every resident of the state..
According to Channels, the Permanent Secretary of the State’s ICT Ministry, Mrs Nike Animashaun said the first phase of the Wi-Fi connectivity would be deployed at parks located at different parts of the state.

Bobbi Kristina is brain damaged, remains unresponsive - Cissy Houston

Yesterday Bobby Brown told the press that his daughter Bobbi Kristina was off life support and was finally awake but Bobbi's grandmother Cissy Houston says this is not true. According to her, the 21 year old girl is suffering from irreversible global brain damage and is completely unresponsive.
    "Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me. I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive.We can only trust in God for a miracle at this time. Keep us in your prayers." Cissy told TMZ

Former Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi sentenced to 20 years in prison

An Egyptian criminal court in Cairo, Egypt's capital has sentenced former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in prison over the killing of protesters in 2012. The former President's supporters attacked opposition protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012, sparking clashes that killed at least 10 people.
Delivering judgement today, Judge Ahmed Youssef dropped the murder charges against Morsi and said the sentence was instead linked to the “show of force” against protesters & unlawful detentions. Morsi who is Egypt's first freely elected president came into office in 2011 after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. He was ousted by the army in 2013.

Buhari will reduce petrol to N40/L - Tam David-West says



Former Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Prof. Tam David-West, in a telephone conversation with Vanguard said Buhari will reduce the current fuel price which is N87 to about N40 per litre when he becomes president.
    “I want to assure you that by the time he takes over, petrol will be dispensed at N40 per litre. This is possible and he has the credibility to make it work. The major assignment of the president-elect when he's eventually inaugurated is to restore confidence to the industry. As military head of state, he dealt with the Federal Executive Council with the tenets of democracy. Buhari will build new refineries to make petroleum products available for the masses. No responsible government will allow the masses to suffer. He will strengthen the refineries within a year. It is possible as we won’t spend any amount in setting up a green field refinery. We already have a blueprint as we shall use what we have to get what we want." He said

Six Countries Turn Down Alison-Madueke’s Asylum Request

A transition committee that would work towards the smooth transition in government from outgoing President Jonathan to President-elect Gen. Buhari on May 29th was inaugurated in Abuja today April 13th.
According to The Nation, the inauguration committee is chaired by vice president Namadi Sambo. In attendance were other members of the committee which includes Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, Head of Service of the Federation, Daniel Kifasi, Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, the Minister of Police Affairs, Jelil Adesinyan & NAFDAC DG, Paul Orhii.

PDP's Nyesom Wike wins Rivers Governorship election

PDP governorship candidate in Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has been declared winner of the state governorship election. INEC's returning officer, Prof Faraday Oruwense announced the results this morning. He said Wike pulled a total of 1,029,102 votes to beat his main opponent, APC's Dakuku Peterside who had 124,896 votes.

INEC declares Imo Governorship election inconclusive

INEC has declared the Imo State Governorship election between APC candidate, incumbent governor Rochas Okorocha and PDP candidate, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, inconclusive.
According to INEC results announced in Owerri yesterday, the APC candidate polled 385,671, while the PDP candidate polled 306,142.
Returning Officer in Imo state, Prof. Ibidapo Obe, said they were declaring the election inconclusive because of the number of canceled votes which was 144,715, compared with the margin of win by Okorocha which was 79,529. Prof. Obe said a new date for new election in the wards in the different LGAs where the votes were cancelled will be announced soon.

April 11 election: Police restricts movement from 8am-5pm

In a bid to further ensure safety and security in the forthcoming Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections holding on Saturday, April 11, 2015, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba CFR, NPM, NPOM, mni has ordered a restriction of vehicular movement in all the thirty-six (36) States of the Federation from 8am to 5pm on Saturday, April 11, 2015 only.
This restriction excludes vehicles on essential duty such as Fire Service, Ambulances and vehicles used by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and law enforcement/security agencies.
There is no restriction of vehicular movement in the Federal Capital Territory as there is no election taking place there on the said date.

The IGP assures that adequate security logistics and manpower have been strategically deployed to achieve a most conducive electioneering atmosphere. In this regard, Policemen for election duty have been properly briefed on their roles as stipulated in the Electoral Act. They are expected to be professional, non-partisan, civil but firm in their approach and relation to the public.
Meanwhile, citizens are enjoined to remain vigilant and report all suspicious movements or dealings to appropriate Police authority.

Kidnapped Orekoya boys: Nanny demands N15million ransom

23 year old Mary Akinloye, the nanny who kidnapped the Orekoya boys on Tuesday April 7th from their home has reached out to the family of the kidnapped boys demanding a N15 million ransom for their release. A friend of the family who spoke with Punch said the nanny called and demanded for N15 million before the boys can be released.Lagos state Police spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu says further investigation into the matter is ongoing. He said there are things the police know but cannot reveal now so as not to break the line of communication with the kidnappers. He said what is important right now is that the boys are returned hale and hearty.

Court rejects application to stop Fayose's impeachment

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the application of Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose,  and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola, to stop the 19 APC members of the state House of Assembly from impeaching them.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed, turned down their request but granted only the prayers contained in their ex parte application regarding the service of the court processes on the defendants.
Fayose and Olusola, through their counsel, Ahmed Raji, had in an ex parte application dated April 7 urged the court to set aside the impeachment notice by granting an interim order stopping the impeachment notice served on them.

Elder bother of Sokoto state Governor kidnapped

The elder brother to the Sokoto state Governor, Aliyu Wammako Alhaji Salihu Baraden Wamakko was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at his farm in Sokoto state yesterday evening April 8th.  The Sokoto state Police spokesperson, DSP Al-Mustapha Sani said the police is now on the trail of the abductors, as their men are now in search of them. The kidnappers are yet to contact the victim's family for any ransom.

Presidential aide, Oronto Douglas dies of cancer at 49

 The Special adviser to President Jonathan on Research, Documentation and Strategy and Niger-Delta environmental activist, died in the early hours of today April 9th at about 5am at the State House hospital where he had been receiving treatment for a cancer related illness.
The lawyer and environmentalist had been sick for a while but continued to work so hard because he believed in the Jonathan administration. He was said to be devastated when President Jonathan lost in the last Presidential election. 
The former Commissioner for information in Bayelsa state was born in 1966. He's survived by his wife and children. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

Photos: Nigerian ship reportedly sunk deliberately to hide evidence of illegal activities

  Captain and crew of a sinking Nigerian ship,were rescued on monday by Environmental activists .The rescued 40 crew from the sinking ship are suspected of conducting illegal fishing near the island of Sao Tope, off the Gabon coast.
The Nigerian-flagged Thunder was being tracked by activists from the charity Sea Shepherd, who believed it was engaged in illegal fishing.

Man with earphone on crushed to death by train in Lagos this morning

An unidentified young man with earphone on, was killed this morning April 8th by a passenger train at Cappa area of Oshodi, Lagos.A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who was inside the train reports that the man was standing on the rail track oblivious to the fast approaching train. The NAN correspondent reports that the Ogun-Lagos-bound mass transit train was leaving its Oshodi station to Mushin when the accident occurred.

Court orders DStv to suspend increase in subscription fees

In March, MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, owners of DStv announced a 20% price increase for all its satellite pay TV bouquets in Nigeria. Multichoice said the increase, which was supposed to take effect from April 1st, was necessary for them to continue offering good quality programming to its subscribers. But the increase is not going to happen for now after a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos restrained the company from increasing the tariffs.

The restraining order was given at the court following a class action suit filed by two Lagos-based lawyers, Osasuyi Adebayo and Oluyinka Oyeniji, challenging the increase. The judge said there should be no increase until the court meets on April 16th to hear the case.

The Peoples Democratic Party has told its members decamping to the main opposition party, APC that it is uncalled for and very immoral of them to decamp to the opposition simply because they lost the presidential election. Olisa Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, while speaking with journalists yesterday in Abuja and answering questions about why thousands of the party members have been decamping to APC, Metuh said he wonders why party members should resolve into that and wonders what those decamping will teach their children about morals. 

Gbemisola Saraki dumps PDP, moves to APC

Senator Gbemisola Saraki has left the PDP and moved to APC. Gbemisola, who vied for the PDP governorship ticket in Kwara state and lost, announced her defection and that of her followers in a statement she released today April 7th. Senator Gbemisola among other things accused the PDP of female victimization. Her statement in part below...

President Jonathan meets with EU observers, praised for conceding defeat

  President Jonathan had a closed door meeting with members of the European Union Observers group at the presidential villa yesterday. The group, led by Mr Santiago Fassi, praised President Jonathan for conceding defeat after loosing in the 2015 presidential election. The group said President Jonathan is a true symbol of democracy and is worthy of emulation not just by other African leaders but all leaders in the world.

Girl born with 'elephant trunk' deformity is worshipped like a god in India

A baby girl born on March 26th with a facial deformity is being worshiped in India like a god. Villagers near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in India, have flocked to see the 'divine' girl with the deformity resembling an elephant's trunk in the belief she is an incarnation of the elephant-headed god Ganesha.
According to Asian News, doctors told the villagers the girl's condition may well be a genetic mutation.
