Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha has relieved the vice
chancellor of Imo State University (IMSU), Professor Bertrand Nwoke. The
sacking of the vice chancellor late Wednesday evening might not be
unconnected with the seeming disagreement the vice chancellor,
had with
Governor Okorocha on the administration of the state university,
especially as regards the free education policy of the state government.
Daily Sun gathered that the embattled vice chancellor who was
immediately replaced by the former National President of the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Ukachukwu Awuzie, had demanded
among other things improved funding of the state university, especially
in the area of infrastructural development and to make money available
to put the necessary things in place for the full accreditation of the
courses of some of the departments. Daily Sun equally learnt that the
Prof Nwoke had also been at loggerheads with the government over its
refusal to regularize his appointment.
A senior lecturer in the university, who spoke with Daily Sun on the
condition of anonymity, stated that the sacked VC had been locked in a
running battle with the state governor, who had refused to regularize
his appointment, despite calls from ASUU, noting that the overbearing
interference of the government in the running of the institution.
According to him, “this is the second vice chancellor of IMSU to be
sacked by Okorocha and it is not healthy for the system.”
