Ohakim, wife escape assassination, As Explosion rocks his house in Owerri

Former governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim and his wife Wednesday night escaped assassination when an explosion rocked their residence in Owerri. The explosion which destroyed the furniture and fittings as well as electronic gadgets in the bungalow located in the Prefab Area of the town was said to have been targeted at the former governor.

Some of the glass windows of the bungalow were also shattered. However, the ex-governor and his wife were not affected by the inferno triggered by the explosion because they did not sleep in the house.
Briefing newsmen today, Chief Ohakim wondered who could have hatched such a dastardly act against him and his family.
He recalled that during his four-year tenure as governor, there was no single assassination or arson that occurred in the state, adding that he went as far as picking the bills of some of the opposition figures who fell sick.
The former governor observed that the devastated bungalow was the only house he currently has in Owerri as against the insinuation that he owns several houses in the capital.
He further disclosed that he acquired the house in 1992, pointing out that besides his severance allowances not being paid, his guest house which he is entitled to as a former governor had been confiscated even as his personal effects in the guest house were also seized.
Ohakim however assured the masterminds that he would not be deterred or cowed, stressing that he was going to make some political statements on Saturday, May 17.
Also speaking, the former governor’s wife, Barrister Lady Chioma Ohakim stated that what saved them from untimely death was that they slept in their Burma country home in Okohia rather than in the bombed bungalow.
Mrs Ohakim informed that they returned for the funeral ceremony of her husband’s uncle which holds today, May 16 adding that instead of spending the night as usual at the bungalow, he convinced her husband that they passed the night in the village.
She added that the masterminds might have thought that they slept in the house and thanked God for saving their lives.
